Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC) is a twelve-year-old faith-based specialized care hospital of 120 beds. It is situated within the central business hub of Arusha city, some 630km from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), North Central Diocese, owns the government-approved health facility. ALMC is related by history and ownership to the iconic and well-established Selian Lutheran Hospital, Ngaramtoni. The institution started operating in November 2008 as a culmination of the vision and untiring efforts of the late Bishop Thomas Laiser, Mr Israel Ole-Karyongi, Dr Mganga Kipuyo and the entire diocesan leadership at that time. The Selian Hospital Board was exceptionally supportive in the landmark decision and action to set up a town satellite clinic of the main hospital. Residents popularly knew it as Selian ya Mjini (or the town branch of Selian).
The force behind intensive resource mobilization and consolidation of commitments was Professor Mark Jacobson who hailed from Minnesota (USA), but had lived in Tanzania for over 20 years. The medical missionary held the helm of the hospital to oversee construction, maintenance and growth over a long period until 2019. Local and international benefactors responded heartedly to his call for support in a move that earned the medical professor immense recognition in church and health circles. Staff and utilities were deployed from Selian to the new centre. In time, the diocese and other people of goodwill who were aware of the value of the mother hospital discerned the need to build a modern facility adjacent to the town clinic. Sooner, the hospital became well capacitated to operate as an autonomous entity with own administration and operations. Presently, ALMC is a fully-fledged specialist care hospital that serves the city of Arusha and the greater catchment around Mt Kilimanjaro.
It has a unique market position given that Arusha is a renowned tourist hub in East Africa.
