In October 1893, the Shangali tribe of the Wachaga tribe, together with the people of his tribe, stayed under a tree in the Nkwarungo area with German missionaries from Leipzig. Missionaries treated stomach ulcers and skin ulcers. Until today this service continues. In 1906, Dr. Herman Ploetze arrived at Machame as a missionary doctor and planned the construction of the first Lutheran hospital in Machame.
The hospital changed and grew within 100 years. For many years the hospital was led and many services were provided by German doctors. Tanzanians as well as people from other countries were able to provide services as well. The first Tanzanian to provide services was Dr. Iraeli S. Moshi in 1976. This hospital served as the first referral and treatment hospital in northern Tanzania and nearby areas with more than 220 beds. Other hospitals were built as well, and Machame has reached a total of 160 beds and serves the Kilimanjaro community and outside.
The hospital is located high on the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro in Hai District of Northern Tanzania, East Africa. With more than 200 health care workers. It serves a population of approximately 300,000 people as well as some from across the country's regions. Since 2013 Machame Hospital has been a Council hospital with bed capacity of 230 and it serves an average of 150 outpatients in daily
